Okinawa Traditional Karate Experience: Train at the Birthplace of Karate and Discover a Living Ryukyuan Tradition

854-1 Tomigusuku, Okinawa Prefecture Tomigusu-jo Site (Castle ruins) Site
July 30, 2026 · 09:30 JST

Experience authentic Okinawan Karate where the martial art was born more than 500 years ago. Unlike modern sport karate competitions, Okinawan Karate emphasizes discipline, self-improvement, respect, character development, and peaceful conflict resolution. Every movement reflects centuries of Ryukyuan history, cultural exchange, and traditional teaching methods passed from master to student across generations. Upon arrival, participants are welcomed by certified instructors who introduce the philosophy of Okinawan Karate and explain why the famous principle "Karate ni sente nashi" ("There is no first attack in karate") remains central to its practice today. Training begins with stretching and warm-up exercises before participants learn fundamental stances, defensive techniques, striking methods, breathing exercises, and introductory kata (forms). Experienced practitioners may receive instruction suited to their skill level, while beginners receive patient guidance in a welcoming environment. Depending on the selected program, participants may also tour exhibition galleries showcasing karate history, legendary Okinawan masters, traditional weapons (kobudo), historical artifacts, and multimedia presentations explaining karate's evolution from the Ryukyu Kingdom to a globally respected martial art.
