About this item

Description

Bring the serene coastal essence of Okinawa into your daily rituals. This hand-thrown ceramic bowl is an authentic piece of contemporary Ryukyu pottery, crafted in Uruma City along Okinawa’s eastern coastline.

Balancing ecological material innovation with deep-rooted island tradition, the piece reflects both the natural environment and cultural heritage of the Ryukyu Islands.

Unique Piece Notice: This item is an authenticated, one-of-a-kind work of art individually handcrafted in Japan. Once sold, this exact piece cannot be duplicated.

Sustainable Craftsmanship & Local Heritage

This ceramic vessel is created by independent artisan Sakae Matsumoto at the Uruma-based studio Saisei Glass Kobo Tetoteto, known for its environmentally conscious approach to ceramic and glass production.

The studio integrates recycled materials with locally sourced natural elements, including karuishi (pumice stone) washed ashore along Okinawa’s coastline. This reclaimed volcanic material is processed and incorporated into the clay body, transforming natural coastal deposits into functional ceramic form rooted in place and time.

Collector Significance

More than a functional object, this vessel represents a contemporary expression of the Ryukyu Islands’ evolving ceramic heritage. Each bowl is individually hand-thrown and finished using traditional techniques, resulting in natural variations in glaze flow, texture, and form that make every piece unique.

The Aesthetic: Ocean Mist and Iron Clay

This bowl captures the atmospheric character of Okinawa’s coastline through layered surface treatment and tactile form.

The Coastal Exterior: The exterior features a mottled glaze of ocean blues, seafoam greens, and sandy neutrals layered over a dark iron-rich clay body. Subtle wheel-formed ridges created by the artisan’s hands enhance its organic, tactile presence.

The Wabi-Sabi Interior: The interior opens into a soft cream glaze that transitions into a fine crackle (kaonuki) formation at the base. These delicate surface fractures evoke the appearance of tide pools over pale coastal sand, subtly shifting with light.
