Traditionally displayed at entrances to invite good fortune and ward off negative energy, these guardian Shisa are reimagined in the dynamic poses of Eisa, Okinawa's iconic folk dance.
Created by renowned Okinawan ceramic artist Motoko Ikeda (池田亥子), each piece is individually handcrafted using traditional stoneware techniques. Rich textures, expressive detailing, and metallic ceramic glazes capture both the protective spirit of the mythical Shisa and the vibrant energy of Okinawan performance culture.
Eisa Drummer Shisa Figure
Inspired by the excitement of a traditional Eisa festival, this collection is available in two handcrafted designs, each celebrating a unique style of Okinawan drumming.
Hand-Drummer Shisa (Paranku) – Depicted in a wide, athletic stance, this figure raises a traditional Paranku hand drum high overhead while preparing to strike with a wooden beater. Its open-mouthed expression and hand-sculpted details symbolize celebration, protection, and good fortune.
Barrel-Drummer Shisa (Shimadaiko) – Holding a large Shimadaiko barrel drum across its chest with sculpted rope straps, this figure conveys strength and focus as it drives the rhythm of the festival forward.
Both designs feature the striking contrast of natural Okinawan stoneware and deep charcoal-black glazed ceremonial robes. Individually sculpted bronze-and-gold metallic curled manes flow into richly textured tails, ensuring every sculpture is a distinctive work of art.
